Athamas
Previous fabula: Ino Euripidis (Fabula 4). This page is Fabula 5 only. Latin and English are given paragraph by paragraph, so each paragraph can be checked against the other. Further fabulae are added as they are finished; see the Hyginus index.
1
Semele quod cum Ioue concubuerat, ob id Iuno toto generi eius fuit infesta; itaque Athamas Aeoli filius per insaniam in uenatione filium suum interfecit sagittis.
Because Semele had lain with Jupiter, Juno was hostile to her whole family; and so Athamas, son of Aeolus, in a fit of madness while hunting, killed his son with arrows.
Notes
- The son is not named in this fabula, and no name is inserted. Fabulae 2 and 4 name Learchus; this fabula does not, and the translation does not borrow the name from them.
- Toto generi is “her whole family”, the whole line, not merely a household. The English drops the quod ... ob id doubling (“because ... for that reason”), which is redundant in English, without changing the sense.
- Edition check, still open: this Latin text has not yet been checked against a printed critical edition; the Packhum online text agrees with the text used here verbatim on this sentence.
Next fabula: Cadmus (Fabula 6). Corrections are welcome via the contact form; please say which paragraph you mean.
